Classic Pens is known for pushing the boundaries of pen design, blending Japanese mastery and Western sensibilities in original and exciting Maki-E works. The LB2 Kimono epitomizes this philosophy.
The LB2 Kimono series was launched in 2006. It comprises 100 fountain pen duets in complimentary colors. The green theme pen is named Shinrin (Forest) while the orange-brown theme pen is Sakyu (Desert). The Maki-E technique employed is Togidashi. The artist paints the urushi color lacquers, then sprays fine gold dust on the cap, barrel and section of the pen. He rubs and burnishes the urushi lacquer to reveal the design and to impart a lustrous shimmer.
The Maki-E design is enhanced with horizontal high relief rings. The artist paints these with urushi lacquer, then spreads gold or silver powder on alternating rings. He paints more lacquer and finally polishes to a lustrous finish. The rings impart a unique and pleasant tactile feel to the pen.
Every LB2 Kimono pen carries the prestigious Red Seal signature of the artist Tatsuya Tōdō on the pen barrel. He paints the individual limited edition number of each pen on the barrel end.
The artist Tatsuya Tōdō is one of the younger Maki-E masters in Japan. He has been awarded many highly coveted prizes for the excellence of his work. Classic Pens and Tatsuya Tōdō have had a fruitful working relationship since 2001. The artist has painted several novel designs for Classic Pens which are part of the LS and AL Signature Collections of Maki-E Art Pens.
The LB2 Kimono Shinrin & Sakyu are hand crafted, with natural precious materials. The artist works with large batches of 40 pens at a time. The mixing and application of the various colors and urushi lacquer with this size batch is very efficient in terms of time and costs. The quality of the natural precious materials and work, however, is always maintained. The cost saving is reflected in the list price and it is passed onto the customer.
The LB2 Kimono pens are housed individually in hand made presentation cases. They are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and lifetime warranty. The color schemes of the cases and certificates compliment those of the LB2 Kimono pens.
The Duofold is one of the most celebrated fountain pen models of all time. The LB2 Kimono series is official, the pens carry the Parker Duofold warranty and after sales service. The Maki-E work carries the guarantee of Classic Pens.
Parker and Classic Pens have had a long and fruitful working relationship. This relationship was further strengthened in 2001, when Classic Pens used the Parker Duofold Centennial as the canvas for its new LS Collection of Maki-E Art Pens. The LB2 Kimono series is yet another testament of the continued and successful positive relationship between these two companies.
The LB2 Kimono pens are packaged individually. They are offered on their own or as a duet with matching limited edition number.
The list price in the USA is $2,950 each.
The list price for a duet with matching limited edition number is $5,900.
Traditional Maki-E art mostly represents scenes of flora and fauna, or themes of Eastern culture. Classic Pens Maki-E designs have often focused on geometry, color, texture and the highest levels of artistry and skill. The LB2 Kimono is faithful to this tradition. More than that, it is a novel idea, an original design.
